Hey Guys!

Welcome:
It’s 7.00pm on Friday 04-06-2010 and I am sitting on the train to York, embarking on an impromptu weekend of fashion research. My amazingly lovely girlfriend; Hannah surprised me this week with two tickets to see an ongoing exhibition at the Gallery of Costume in Manchester. So I Thought I would kill some time and post another newsletter. The exhibition Sounds pretty cool, so hopefully I will not only film the whole thing but find some great source imagery also. See below for ArtsHub’s online article about the event/ gallery.
Preview of Manchester’s Gallery of Costume | ArtsHub Article | Wednesday, March 10, 2010 |
A first glimpse of the refreshed collection including rare 17th century pieces, a Givenchy dress made for Audrey Hepburn and the principal exhibition, Suffragettes to Supermodels: 100 years of fashion (1910 – 2010), which features designers such as Alexander McQueen, Zandra Rhodes and Vivienne Westwood.

Blog updates:
This month work has been pretty slow due to unmentionable reasons, but just so you know everything has turned out great! Despite the distractions I have managed to start designing the couture side of the collection. They are somewhat basic designs at the moment, but I hope to be adding more detail next week. Also I have made a bit of headway on the print development side of things. For all the detailed info and links to these videos please see below.

I have dedicated the next two weeks to design…. 24/7 design! I need to start nailing this collection since time is literally slipping by.

Coming up:

A hole load of design work, I will need to pump out at least 300 designs in order to pick out the show stoppers, so I guess that will be an episode in itself, not to mention more wall overviews.

Many thanks:

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone that has e-mailed me over the past couple of weeks, with comments of encouragement and appreciation… This project proves really tough after a full day at the office and on many occasions i have felt like what is the F***ing point, and your e-mails have put a smile on my face and make it all worth while…

I know this project doesn’t seem like a huge amount of work when you watch 3-4 minute videos but there is so much prep involved in it. SO….. THANK YOU, YOUR ALL LEGENDS!

All the best…

Ralph Pink

EPISODE 12 DESIGN PART 2 from ralph pink on Vimeo.

 About:
This video is part 2 of 2 in the “Design Process” series.

Drugs:
The video explains in a rather unusually visual way, how I create an atmosphere and mindset that allows me to design creatively and fluidly. This video is my first attempt at creative filming, so be kind. Unfortunately it didn’t turn out quite like I imagined it would, but then I really don’t have much experience.

Design:
The second half of this video is a speeded up look at me designing. These designs focus on the ideas that have emerged in my work so far and are largely un-detailed concentrating on silhouette and balance, rather than detail. I have only displayed about 10 designs, considering it would take forever to show them all.

I hope you enjoy the video it took some time to produce, even though it is a bit shit!

Epsiode 8 satge2: ink, illustration & thinking about fruit from ralph pink on Vimeo.

About:

The first stage of actual print development!
Using my print as a template I start to, play around with inks and paints, to further develop and expand my print ideas.
This particular video displays one of the three different ways I am developing the print template. (Created in: “cutting, transforming & making a basic print”).
The Inks didn’t work out so well, but they have provided some nice ideas for other possible prints :)

Episode 8 Stage 2: Cutting, transforming & maiking a basic print (overview) from ralph pink on Vimeo.

About:                                                                                                                                                                                     A quick overview, to explain what happened next with our source roses taken in stage 1. This blog describes, the concept of cutting the roses from their background, then resizing and transforming these individual pics. We then start to build the finnished print template by use importing an existing background to help us place the roses in a realistic way.

EPISODE 7 from ralph pink on Vimeo.

About:
A calamitous collection of my research so far…
After looking back I realise I haven’t really described my ideas and explained my research in much depth.   So this video is to outline my current stage of research and the emerging themes within. Since I am at a stage of limbo with my research it might not be particularly clear what direction it is all going in…. But hey! it all makes sense to me and hopefully it will to you at some stage in the future.
